Odometer stopped working and from what I read, the instrument cluster needs to be replaced. Question: 1. My panel is without tachometer and trip odometer. Can I replace this cluster with an instrument cluster that features the tachometer and trip odometer? 2. Is it possible that I may be able to repair the odometer myself considering I have a strong electrical background? Appreciate any help I can get.

It will work but not sure the tach wires are there on the clip on harness connector that attaches to the back of the cluster.

I'll ask around..................

The Tach wire "should" be on the clip that goes into the cluster , not sure of the color.

A member on the Jbody forums said so.

Thanks Doug for the info. One more question though: If I purchase an instrument cluster from a salvage yard with 100K , how do I turn it back to reflect my vehicles original miles of 65K? Thanks so much for the info.

Thanks Doug for that link. At least now I know that the odometer motor can be replaced. But from what I gathered these motors are not commercially available, thus my only options would be to find an instrument cluster in a salvage yard or if I'm lucky, it might be repairable on the spot.

FYI: According to Federal law if I replace my odometer it has to be reset to 0000 and make written note of such change and mileage on the door panel. Q: Is it difficult to reset a replacement odometer?

I have never done it , but just turning the odometers gears should be easy once the motor is separated. If its just the drive motor, just replacing the motor in yours should fix the problem.

Then you can leave it as is.

Instrument Clucter: Interchangeability

Just two more questions Doug and that should be it. Do appreciate your help.

Q: Can you tell me what year instrument clusters are interchangeable with a 1992 Sunbird?

Q: Does it make any differance if the cluster came from a 2.0L or a 3.1L engine?

If you have a 4 OHC and want the tach to work, the V6 one wont read right.

NEW INFO

If you have a "white wire" in your current car's cluster connector, than its set up for a tach. If it doesnt , then you will have to add a wire or grab the connector with the cluster and run a wire to the computer.

Of course, if you dont have the oil pressure guage and other guages , sending units and wires will have to be changed if you swap clusters with them.

Odometer working

After disconnecting my battery then replacing the drivers side power window motor and exterior window sweep, the vehicle began stalling at stoplights. After reviewing many of the forum posts, I decided my first step would be to re-train or re-learn the ECM.

After completing the 7 or 8 simple steps involved in this process, the engine no longer stalled when stopped at red lights. And much to my amazement the odometer began working normally again. Since the odometer motor was never the problem Doug, how could the ECM affect the operation of the odometer and not the speedometer?

In closing I want to mention that I replaced my window sweep with part MR260X, purchased from Danno Enterprises. After careful thought and a few choice words, I was able to install it with little modification. Works and looks great. Thanks so much for your help

I wouldn't have a clue about that Mike, I do know that my speedo pointer does bounce around or goes 360 while cranking. Sometimes its stuck past 80mph and goes back to normal as I drive a bit. Maybe its the speed sensor is hooked to the computer somehow.

Glad you got it squared away.....;)

How do the sweepes attach to the moulding? ( glue or staples?)

Odometer: I jumped the gun

As I mentioned previously, I assumed my odometer/ECM worked independently of the speedometer. It must have been a fluke when the odometer started working again after relearning the vehicles ECM because after 10 miles, it stopped turning.

Obviously this has to be a mechanical issue, or possibly to a lesser degree a loose electrical connection at the odometer motor. Now I have no choice but to remove the cluster and hopefully locate the problem. Prior to removing it I will have to locate a back up panel at a salvage yard just in case.

Doug: I wrote detailed instructions regarding the window sweep. When I went to post it the sight went down and I lost everything. But to answer your question: I riveted the new sweep to the molding. I eliminated the existing door clips and secured the molding/sweep to the door with the 2 screws I previously removed and 1 additional screw placed just before the the belt molding curves towards the mirror. Need Odometer stepper motor

Hate to beat a dead horse but hopefully this will be my last post on this subject.

Upon my observation and a link previously posted below http://www.syty.net/forums/showthread.php?t=78987, I've come to the conclusion that the gearing on the motor that turns my odometer is either stripped or worn. My problem is locating a stepper motor that has the same mounting and terminal configuration that is used in the Sunbird instrument cluster.

Upon searching ebay and other sights, stepper motors that are readily avialible are not of the same design and terminal configuration. Since there are no Sunbirds in my local salvage yards (Ft Myers), are there vehicles that utilize the same motor type as the Sunbird? Appreciate any help I can get on this one.
