Oil change light wont reset

Hi all. i have an 08 Torrent i just picked up. I changed the oil and tryed to reset the oil change light by the following procedure. turn key to on, push gas pettal to the floor 3 times, turn key back to lock. i have done this many times and the light keeps coming back on. any suggestions on this?

this is from the owners manual, if that doesnt work you have a problem with the system, make sure you dont have a floor mat in the way

1. Turn the ignition key to ON/RUN with the engine off.
2. Fully press and release the accelerator pedal
three times within five seconds.
The change engine oil light will flash while the
system is resetting.
3. When the light stops flashing, turn the key to
LOCK/OFF.

My owners manual states that as well. But I have had problems with it resetting correctly as well. To correct it when the light stops flashing in step 3 above, I press the accelerator pedal one time then turn the key off.
