Hi Guys. New to this forum. I have a similar problem with my 99 GT 3.4 160,000 miles. Ever since I bought the car which was in Feb. it would heat up from amb to 200 in about 10-15 minutes of drive time. Car would kick to about 220 and fans would start up and cool back down to about 200. I thought it was strange to have such a quick rise as I also have a 2000 SE which has the same engine and didn't go past 180 in the same timeframe or distance. Well anyway, the other day it just stalled out and wouldn't start back up until it cooled down.

Today my son drove the car and on his way home all the gauges shut down while the car was still driving. Luckily he was close made it home before it completely stopped.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Concerning the overheating it could be a bad thermostat or the cooling system needs to be flushed.
Have you checked the battery? What happens when you try to start? Grand Am's have a habit of having bad ignition switches.
