Hey guys I recently acquired a 72 lemans. I have had it down for a few days to swap the intake manifold, four barrel carb, and i new flow kooler water pump. I got it back together and running, but now it overheats. It had the original water pump and no t-stat before. With this new pump I tried no t-stat and a 180. It still will get to 210 and keep climbing at idle. The coolant keeps puking out of the radiator cap and there are no carbon gases in the radiator. Does anyone have any experience or wisdom for this situation?

the water pump divider plate and sleeves were in good condition, no rust? You have a fan clutch that is working correctly? When the thermostat opens at 180 or with no thermostat, you should use one, do you see water flowing past the radiator fill neck?

No rust. Doesn't have a clutch. There seems to be water flowing. I'm not sure if there is an issue with these high flow pumps cutting the dwell time too much.

I run one wth a 160 thermostat and have no issues. You have the complete fan shround? There was no problem with the original set up? No chance the new intake manifold has a blockage in the water passages front or back? The little round rubber bushing where the manifold meets the pump had a hole in it?

So I figured it out and it is a good testament to taking your time and not trying to rush. Apparently when I replaced the water pump I neglected to notice the metal plate that sits behind it and directs water flow. Stupid novice mistake but I got it worked out. Thanks for the suggestions anyways. Now I found a dead cylinder so it looks like I'm doing a top end rebuild.

Not clear what you mean by noticed the metal plate? Do you mean you forgot to reinstall it or it was rusted out? Did you do a compression test on the dead cylinder?

I didn't notice the plate when I pulled the old pump and thus forgot to reinstall it. Cleaned it up and put it in with the new pump and it cools perfectly.
I did a compression test. All the cylinders read 97-105 except one which was just dead as in 0 compression.

Can I assume you have the stock rocker arm set up where there is no adjustment, you just tighten the rocker arm nut to 30 ft/lbs?
