hello guys, I went to the junkyard yesterday and found some interesting stuff. There was actually quite a few Pontiacs there and all were 400's. my goal was to find a decent set of heads for a 400 I recently bought as a short block. I'm wondering if I can salvage a set or even snag a few parts off one of these. what sorts of accessories could I nab that would still work? I'm going to post pics of some heads which were 6x and 16s. I also saw some late 70s birds and t/a's but I couldn't see the head indicators. are those heads any good? ill post pics as soon as I can.

so I found out that the 16 heads from 68 have 72 cc combustion chambers. this is 10 to 1 compression on a 400 so would that mean even higher compression on a 350? I would like to run premium gas on this engine. the yard wants 40 bucks a piece for these heads so I'm thinking this would be worth it to bolt em on

it would mean lower compression, you are only squeezing 43.75 cubic inches into 72CC versus 50 cubic inches, but with today's gas that's fine.

that makes sense. I would probably still be running higher compression with the 16 as opposed to the 94s that came stock on the car right?

correct smaller CC on the 16's and bigger valves

so when I get time to go up to the yard and pull these things should I take the pushrods too or just use the ones I have on my motor already? bolt em on and go? I don't really want to sink any money into these heads for the moment.I just want a little more pep until I finish the 400 build. after that I may use them on another project or something

they use the same pushrods and rockers, so as long as there is no wear on yours no need to get more of them.

that's what I figured. the whole interchangeability is still almost too good to be true haha. thank you melsg I will let you know how the swap goes. I just put the right stuff disc brakes on the car and once the master cylinder swap happens I will be making a trip to the junkyard. oh and by the way, the yard wants 325 for the 400 that I'm taking these heads off. is that a good deal??

I dont buy or sell parts so I cannt really advise you on the price. Gut feeling sounds good but do they give any guarantee that the block isnt cracked?

i didn't ask about insurance but i will when i go back. i figure its a good idea to pick em while they are still out there. thank you so much for the info melsg. ill let you know how i progress. ill try and get some pics of the car online too.
