When driving the Grand Am around, our "Trac Off" light comes on and it stays on. Our manual simply tells us to take it to a dealership. I was hoping to find out what it was before I take it in. Maybe there's a less expensive fix?

Well its a little odd that the ABS light isnt on to or is it? but not impossible. go to auto parts and have them scan veh see if the cheezy scanner they all use will scan the data for ETS if will find where fault is then fix if it wont you need to go to dealer but hint u dont have to let them do repair just have them tell you mwant need to be repaired.

Unless the Service Engine Soon light is on, the OBD II readers will not pick up anything. You can take it to the dealer to find out what the problem is without having them fix it. The issue is when they tell you it is the brakes and you can't leave there without getting it fixed. Then you are forced to pay them to fix the problem or they wont give you your car back.

BAD WHEEL HUB! grand ams are known for this problem (I've gone through four). The ABS sensor is built into the wheel hub, and when it goes bad the traction control will shut itself off. Sometimes the ABS light will come on, sometimes not. A word of advice - when repolacing this part, go with the aftermarket replacement, it is much stronger. My factory GM parts went bad after only 6 months, the aftermarket part has lasted 22 months now. Don't let the cost difference deter you. You get what you pay for.
