Pontiac Grand Am runs at very high RPM's when I start it!?

I let it run for a bit then turn it off. When I restart it it runs fine any idea of how to fix it, or what the problem may be?

Where in the US are you and what condition is it outside when you start the car. Most cars do rev a little high when it is cold outside. Once they warm up they reset to 1000 rpm's. Give me a little more detail and I can try to answer it better for you.
