Now here's a vehicle I used to love - well, the old ones. I've never been a big fan of the new cars coming back in subcompact form. Still, they were nice cars and a better option than most of the other subcompacts.. Did you own one of these? Let's hear about your experiences.. If you have any pictures, please post them up...

Hiya Sal,

The LeMans is a favorite of mine as well. Mine is a 1968 I picked up about 4-5 years back from a woman who had since about 1973 (it was her first car). She did not really wish to part with it but she was looking for a new house and did not want to have limit her search to one that had a garage big enough for the families 3 other vehicles.

It has 69k and I picked it up for $4,000.

K -

That's a sweet looking ragtop you found. Looks to be in good condition as well. And you're fortunate in that repro parts are readily available. Me, I've always liked the '73-'77 A-bodies, particularly the '77 Can Am. Don't own one, but hope to someday. Have a '77 Trans Am to satisfy my cravings so far. Enjoy it!

Thanks T,
yeah, it is in decent shape; a couple areas where ther is some bubbeling of the paint, but nothing fatal.

The mid 70's had some serious boats that the gas crisis killed off, but there were some nice ones.

Can anyone tell me what the distance is between backing plates of the 1972 LeMans is? I am looking for a rearend that is 56 1/2 inches between backing plates. What was the "normal" gear ratio in the 4 door or 2 door for that matter? Thank you, Wally

Sounds sweet. There should be plenty of sites that have the production numbers...or someone who knows where the info is. Performance Years, Pontiac Zone, and Classical Pontiac are all decent forums, and may yield an answer for you.

Me, I still prefer '73-'77 Lemanses (well, and the other GM A-bodies too), and could give you a link to production numbers for them, but that wouldn't help. Good luck searching!

'65 LeMans

I have a '65 LeMans. I love that car and will be sad to see her go! Selling her as i am moving across country. I understand about gas guzzling but with that car I never cared as she has been a dream to be on the road in. 326, 4 barrell Edelbrock, and worth every cent I ever spent on her!!

My '71 LeMans Sport. Has run a best of 12.35sec @ 109.36mph with a 1.69 60 ft at 2300 ft elevation and 7.68sec @ 89.75mph (1/8 mile).

:) As my introduction earlier today said, I own a 77 LeMans Sport Coupe. I won't repeat details about it, but I love the car.

My oldest brother still has his '73 GTO that he bought new in '73 after waiting for the 455/4spd car that never materialized, and settled for a 400 auto instead. Then my Dad bought a '73 GTO in '79 and and still has it.

I started out with a 77GP and had a mishap with it, and fell into my LeMans. I was lucky to find such a nice car.

I have owned quite a few Lemans /tempest cars over the years also GTOs and GT-37 sport coupes my first was a 68 lemans with a swapped in 327 Chev engine (ya I know I was 16) and a three speed saginaw that kept getting stuck between first and second gears , Stupid slide rail shifter!
I had to carry a tire iron to hit the linkage with after attempting a 1-2 power shift!:)
I just purchaced a 71 lemans and a 70 GTO and plan on putting them both back together , unfortunatly they will probably get Chevrolet engines as Pontiac engines are getting pretty rare and harder to find parts for around here .. but mabye I can find some ...
