My 15 yr. old Sunbird's transmission has never been flushed and the fluid is dirty. I have heard not to flush after it gets dirty. Will this do any damage to the engine if not flushed?
No dirty transmission fluid will not hurt an engine. If you do flush it then most likely you will have problems. That doesn't mean a filter change and some new fluid won't hurt. When you change the filter you only replace about half of all trans. fluid because some is in the torque converter and valve body. But to flush it 99% of the time never ends well.
Just have all fluid pumped out, put in new, change filter, drive.
Since it's dirty, it probably as well is burnt (smells bad).
Flushing an engine is one thing but flushing a trans is another.
MANY small moving parts and passageways that can easily become obstructed resulting in a rebuild/replace.
