Problem on 2004 Pontiac Grand Am?

The problem is this- while I am driving the car it seems that there are times that the car feels like it will stall. But it doesn't happen when I have my foot pressing down on the accelerator, only when the car is coasting. It idols fine. But sometimes when the car is coasting, I can see the RPM's drop alittle for a split second, then go back up immediately. It feels like the car is going to stop when this happens. The car has approximately 117,000 miles on it and has had no other major problems. I thought it might have something to do with the spark plugs needing replaced- anybody able to help?

Try changing the fuel filter. Does the check engine light come on at this time? And yes with that many miles you should have them changed.

Spark plugs are possible but unlikely. I think the spark plug wires would be more likely than the plugs themselves (more environmental variables for those). More likely still would be air flow and oxygen sensors.

You know it's spark (unlikely...in that case the problems would be a little more severe, or non-existent...but maybe possible if you're only having problems on a couple of cylinders), fuel, or air...and I'm betting fuel or air.

See if your computer is storing any codes. They can do this for free at most auto parts stores. If it's still under warranty, you might have the dealer do it.


The real core problem, though, is that it is a Grand Am. Good luck.

My guess is that it could be a fuel problem. Check anything that might get clogged, replace the fuel filter, clean the fuel injectors, check air filter. I would check to make sure all the major connections under the hood are intact. I would also check the spark plugs like you said.

It's weird that it idles fine though. If it happens when it is only in gear, then it could be a transmission problem.

Is it is a V6 check your intake manifold gasket leak. Your coolant (dexcool) might have leaked into the engine causing this problem. very common in grand ams.
