Hi,
I have a 1967 Catlina with a 4 speed muncie m20 transmission.
Can you simply remove the engine or does the gearbox have to be removed first?
Tobi

Yes it is very possible to remove the engine with either an automatic or manual trans still attached, your manual trans is actually a bit easier to do. Besides disconnecting the shifter & Clutch Linkage, remove the trans crossmember, you will need to either drain the transmission, or use a Plug to keep the oil from coming out the rear seal ( where the driveshaft attaches)

The engine/transmission assembly will need to be tilted up to around a 45 degree angle as it is raised out of the car. It is usually done with an engine equalizer like in the picture Below. As for a Plug you can either use the Yoke off of the front of the driveshaft (I have done that with either a spare, of if I was going to replace the U-Joints anyway just dissassembling the yoke from the driveshaft at that time, or buy a cheap plastic plug, also pictured below. It also helps to have at least 2 people to do the job as it makes spotting interference points easier.
I would also fully remove the fan shroud to make it easier as I see it is still present in the pictures you Posted. Good Luck and be careful.

Hi,
Thanks for the answer. I mean the gearbox stays in the car. I just want to take out the engine.
Someone told me that with a manual gearbox, that has to be removed.
Sorry for the english is google

On a Manual I have always removed it with the engine, It just makes things easier for reassembly, remember you have to align the transmission input shaft with the Clutch disk, and while you have it out replacing the clutch and resurfacing the flywheel are good ideas unless they were replaced recently.
I suppose it is possible to do it, but you will still have to remove the clutch linkage as it attaches to the drivers side of the engine block. You could try to just remove the transmission from the bellhousing but you would have to either pull the transmission back to pull the input shaft fully out of the bellhousing, or the engine forward enough to do the same (i don't think that is actually possible with oil pan clearance issues)

I think it is easier to leave it on the engine myself

Pull them together otherwise you will end up removing the transmission anyway due to the difficulty of getting the input shaft of the transmission through the clutch disc into the pilot bearing.
