I was wondering if anyone has experience renovating a trans am? Back story- I found a 1983 transam. Its in poor condition, but I am willing to renovate.I think the car has a lot of potential. The seller is asking for $1495, which I think is a bit high, but I understand used cars are a bit overpriced these days.

I am thinking of buying the car, but people are trying to talk me out of it. One of the complaints being that its a v8 and gas guzzling. I really dont have a problem with putting a couple thou in it as long as it will run.

Feedback much appreciated!

depends on your definition of renovation. A few thousand can quickly turn into a lot more. Make a list of the things you have to do and a list of things you would like to do. Figure out the cost of parts and if youre not doing it yourself the cost of labor. Look up the value of the car at www.nada.com and www.collectorcarmarket.com. The price of gas is only relevant if it's a daily driver and how far you have to go.

Thank you melsg5 for the links. I got the dealer the drop the price to $1000 so there's a good chance I'll get it. However, sometimes it wont start after rain.

When you say wont start after rain, do you mean the starter does not turn the engine over or the starter works and the engine wont ignite?

I'm thinking its an engine issue. When it rains everything under the hood is sopping wet. However, on dry days it seems fine or so the dealer says.

why would everything under the hood be sopping wet when it rains? sounds like it needs new plug wires, maybe cap and rotor, maybe coil.
