Running funny! Please help

I've got a 97 firebird with the 3800 series engine. And for the past week it's been making a funny noise. Sounds like its coming from the engine. When I go to give it gas it takes awhile to get up and go. Some places have said it could be the cat converter but others say they don't know. I'm honestly at a stand still. Anyone have any ideas or have had the same problem?? Anything will help

is your check engine light on? can you be more specific about the noise, what part of the engine is it coming from?
