Hey all, hope someone can help point me in the right direction. Got a 1998 Sunfire which has just developed a strange problem. The safety belt light comes on and flashes randomly and also the same for the interior light, also the audible noise to tell you to fasten your belt no longer chimes which makes me think its a wiring issue rather than a switch/sensor. Any ideas?? Please

Does it come on when only you are in the car or also when you have a buckled passenger?

I would start with looking under both seats for a broken or partially broken wire going to the seat sensor.

Going to do that now...but would that cause the dome light to come on? I've checked the door switches and they're both good.

Can't see any loose or broken wires under the seat, there is no switch on the passenger side. I unclipped the connector and bridged the connection and the problem is still there...seat belt light comes on solid and then starts flashing. Its a 1998 2 door if that helps

I've disconnected the C200 harness connector in the drivers kick panel and Problem is still there. Where does the seat belt sensor wire go when it leaves the C200 harness? I've cleaned the battery terminals and the ground on the battery tray and they're all good. I've read that there is a ground for the cluster behind the dash...anyone know where?

I'm making the assumption that the common denominator here is that there is always somone sitting in the driver's seat. I'd check the sensors under there first.

I was under the impression that there wasn't a sensor under the seat, the seat belt reminder only sounded for a few seconds to remind you to buckle up, it never sounded after the initial turn of the key

I'll be honest with you, I'm not sure, but if there is a sensor under the passenger seat, there's could very well be one under the driver's seat. Also, is the switch is in the seat belt. it's harness could also very well pass under the seat. At the very least, I'd get a flashlight and look under the seat to see if something looks amiss.

there is no switch or sensor on the passenger side, just the switch in the drivers buckle. No wires coming from the seat just the ones from the buckle that run under the center console

SOLVED!
After tearing the dash out to check for loose connections and bad grounds it turned out to be moisture in the fuse box, all of the fuses had a brown film covering them. Upon further inspection the firewall grommet had been pulled out and had been letting in a small amount of water which im guessing had been evaporating up in that direction. Thanks for your help and suggestions.
