Hello, I am considering purchasing a 2001 Sunfire ( 2.2l ) and would like some advice. The engine has a knock and I was wondering what the most common causes would be with this engine ( ie. do certain cylinder rod bearings or lifters fail or certain years have oiling problems ). I haven't heard it run yet but I am familiar with the 2.2 as my daughter has a 97 Cavalier with the 2.2 in it. She has put about 90k on it ( car has 240k total ) and so far the biggest repair I have had to make is timing chain replacement. The car is a one owner in better than average condition and the price is $1000. Fair price? What should I be on the lookout for problem wise ? I know its hard to answer questions like this but I am trying to get more familiar with these cars before I make the trip to go look at it. Thanks all.

Look for signs of blown head gasket, water in oil, etc. There is no common cause for a knock in this engine. The timing chain and tensioner as you know can make a noise but otherwise it's a question of how well it was maintained by previous owners. I had a 2.2 in a Cavalier and when I got rid of the car the engine was still fine with 172,000 miles on it. For prices look at www.edmunds.com or www.nada.com
