Hello,
We are thinking of buying a 1996 Sunfire. It has over 200,000 miles on it, but just has a new transmission put in. Interior is still good, brakes are a little soft, and there is a whirring/humming noise as it begins acceleration, but goes away at about 30 MPH. AC blows cool, not cold.

We are willing to put money in a safe starter car for our son. The high mileage and the loud hum bothers me. I just don't want to waste a grand.

Thank you for your input!
JB

did you look at the price at www.edmunds.com, it's not worth a grand! more like 400 to 500

I think you answered your own question.

I personally would be wary of a 200k mile car not knowing its history. Other more adventurous folks would likely have no problem with it.

There are most likely more low mileage cars for that price (In my area there is), if your scared of the mileage and humming noise then look for another car in that price range. Look around theirs tons of cars floating around.

Personally I wouldn't go for a car like that with that mileage, as anything could go wrong with that mileage.
