Hi,

I test drove a 2009 Pontiac Montana yesterday and I really like the drive. However, there were a couple of "red flags".

The seller told me that they replaced 2 front wheels and that caused the "Service Tire Monitor System" warning to go "on". Which I believe because I have the same behaviour on my other car.

However the car also showed the following additionnal 2 messages:
- Service Traction System (message dissapeared when I turned TCS off)
- Service Stability system

The seller told me that the above 2 messages were also related. I have my doubts. Can anyone share their knowledge on this ?

I am not a "car savvy" person. I'm just started to get interested in changing tires, brake pads, making oil changes. So I have this ODBII scanner I took along for the test drive, plugged it in the Pontiac and I had no errors coming back is this normal ? Weird because I see errors in the dashboard but my scanner did not picki it up ?

The rear wipper did not work as well. I read a bit on this board about some quick fixes so I am not that concerned.

The car is a 2009 with 120 000 KM's and she is asking 6000$ canadian.

Is this a good reliable van ? How well does it drive in the winter.

the wheel bearings dont cause the tire system to throw a code. Either they rotated tires and didnt reset the system or they have other issues with the tires system such as the sensors.
The traction/stability could be related to the the ABS sensors or the wire harness connected to the sensors.
Your scanner is for engine codes not ABS or BCM codes.

The price was in canadian and it was the cheapest for the year and km's.

I'm still interested in the Pontiac Montana I heard good things about them.

Please be careful when looking at a Montana built before 2003; the earlier transmissions had a bad habit of losing 4th gear due to a shaft stripping it's splines. After 2003, these transmission shafts were hardened.

I learned this the hard way. But I still love our 2001 Montana, and would recommend a Montana to anyone! We have 177,905 miles on ours, and is still running strong other than this trans problem.

Dan does the 03 have the updated shaft? My tranny slips usually from a dead start maybe once or twice a week .
 
From what I've read, if the transmission was built in 2003 or later, it will have the hardened 4th gear shaft.

My van is a 2001, but the tags on the transaxle say it was built in Sept. of 2000.

As far as your trans. slipping from a dead stop, that should be a different problem. If your 4th gear shaft has stripped splines, the engine will run about 2,200 rpm at 60 mph. At 70 mph, it will be at about 3,000 rpm.

If you still have 4th gear, the engine runs about 1800 rpm at 60 mph. I say "about" because there are different final drive ratios available, and non-stock tire sizes will make a difference too.

In regards to your trans, is there a code set in the PCM? I'll assume your fluid level is where it ought to be and the engine is running smoothly.
