Should you be able to drive w/o serpentine?

Hi there, first post on a forum in... forever? So I apologize if I miss anything 😅

Anyhow, I am not a certified mechanic, but I do all my own maintenance and modding so I know a few things, but I had a bit of a strange thing happen and need help.

I was doing a pull in my 2004 2.2L, 5 speed, and my belt broke. I pulled over, turned the car off, picked the snapped belt off the road, and immediately drove home before my battery died since I knew the alternator wouldn't be working anymore (my battery light came on too). The thing is, I made it home without any struggling steering and without any obvious issues with the water pump, and dont understand how that's possible since both the power steering and water pump are also routed with the same belt, correct?

If anyone has any info that could help me out, it would be much appreciated!

So you did not see the temperature gauge start to go up?

You sure it works?
How many miles/kilometers did you drive?

Yep in Canada, I'd presume 90 farenheit.
The gauge? Yes.
I drove about 15 kms to make it back home and haven't touched her since.
 
90 Fahrenheit ? You do mean celcius?
If you really mean 90 Fahrenheit your gauge or sender has a problem
Normal operating temperature is 195 F

Ah okay, celcius would be what I mean then. I never bothered to care enough if the gauge was metric or imperial or whatever lol. Just to be sure I'll check the gauge when I'm back home.

Anyways I'm sure the gauge is fine and the car wasn't overheating, its overheated before so I know what that feels and looks like haha
 
Solved:

Gauge is totally fine as I thought, and it is in celcius if anyone cares. Turns out for whatever reason all the diagrams I saw on saying the serpentine belt controlled the power steering, water pump, etc, were off quite a bit.

I replace the belt myself, and it turns out it only wraps around the crank and alt.

Anyways, have a good one.

The water pump on your engine is driven by a timing chain sprocket.
The power steering pump is driven off one of the engine camshafts.
