I recently just finished rebuilding a 2.4l 99 sunfire. and it runs, but only for 2 seconds then shuts off,i can hear the fuel pump kick on and off, also checked the relay in the fuse box for it as well to make sure the ohms/resistances were doing what they are to when engage? any ideas as to what could be causing it to shut off after 2 or 3 seconds? any advice is helpful, I've done everything i can think of. thank-you

wow I have the same problem. what I was told by the dealer who had the car for three days, said that year model had an instrument cluster problem. They are called smart cluster beacuse every input from all the sensors, computers, relays and many electrical units goes through the instrument cluster for an ok to start when you first trun the key to on. The cluster communacates with all these items and if there is one that is not commucating with the cluster it won't allow the car to start. Another big problem is the pass lock system. Is your security light flashing? if it is then your car won't start. The security system is giving a cutoff singel to your fuel controll to shut off. thats why your abel to start the car for a few seconds and it shuts off. The solution can be coastly and time comsuming. You got to find which system is not commucating. For me he narroued it down to the PCM and /or air bag sensor underneth the passenger seat or to an open wire some where.

ya i stripped the car down to the frame. once already and have put it all back to factory specs. right now i found that my fuel filter was filled with junk, going to drop the tank and clean it all and start again and see if it has anything to do with it.. thanx for the input. hopefully it not anything with sensors. i checked over half of them. was going to use and od2 but first was going to put on a new fuel filter... now that it was dirty im a little behind bc i want to clean the tank.
