i just recently purchased a 1995 pontiac sunfire 2.2l 5 speed.
it has a whole lot of miles on it and a blown head gasket.
i dont know much about cars, but was thinking about just getting a new engine and i was told that you could put a cavalier motor in it??
is this true?
if so what years
and what year sunfires could i use?

Not sure what years fit, but to answer your question, yes, the Cavalier 2.2 engines will bolt right in.
Keep in mind that a 2.4 will not fit in place of the 2.2, unless the transaxle is changed as well.

Just me, but if the engine still turns over, I'd pull the head and have a look around. I bought a Cavalier with a bad head gasket that was run pretty hot, several times.

To my surprise, the head was fine. All that was needed was about $40.00 worth of gaskets. The car is still running fine, and getting over 30 mpg combined town and highway driving.
So, it is definitely worth checking. You'll need to check the head for warpage, and any decent repair manual will have details on how to do this. This job does not require a lot of specialized tools either. A torque wrench is about as high tech as you'll need.
Also, do not use abrasives to clean the surface of the head! The head is made of aluminium, and it is very easy to remove or damage the edges of the head in the area of the combustion chamber. Again, any decent manual should cover this.

Good luck.

okay thank you! the guy i bought it from said he bought it 2 years ago in the same condition and it runs perfectly fine, no milky oil or anything yet

The one I bought didn't really show any classic signs of a bad head gasket either. It ran just fine, with the exception of boiling all of the coolant out in short order.lol
There was just a tad of water in the oil after the last time it was run, but that was my fault, I drove the car 25 miles when it really should have been towed. And I let the temperature got away from me once during the trip. (I was cruising top down, and it was running so well, I forgot it had a problem, until the dash lit up. lol ) But no, it never did have excessive smoke from the tail pipe, or anything like that.
You may get lucky.
