do I need a special wiring harness to install a stereo?

Hi Everyone

I have a 2005 sunfire with the most basic stereo in it. I want to put in an aftermarket stereo but when approaching a stereo store they tell me I have to buy a special wiring harness as the chimes/ airbags etc go through the stereo harness. Are they pulling the wool over my eyes or is this true. Said the part would cost $150. Any thoughts

Cheers
Al

When we put in my Pioneer aftermarket deck, I didn't need any "special" wiring harness. Just the wiring harness that came with the deck and just match the wires up and splice them together. But I do think their is a wiring harness that you can get for your specific car that makes it easier, but I don't see why they told you that you NEED to but it.

You don't NEED to buy it, but if you wanna keep all your warning chimes, you're gunna wanna buy that harness. I would shop around, eBay has them for cheap I believe, I bought mine at Canadian Tire for $45 CDN. It just plugs into the stock harness, you match and hook up the wires from the aftermarket harness to the aftermark decks wiring harness and plug it in to the back of the deck. then you have to plug in the little speaker box that comes with it, and that little speaker plays the "ding ding" chimes whenever it was originally supposed to. You CAN splice the wiring together without the special harness, but you will lose ALL of your warning chimes. It won't affect the air bag, but it does affect the chimes. And those chimes are very handy for if you forget your key in the ignition or forget to turn off the headlights.

ALL of my chimes work just fine and I don't have that harness.

I agree with 2000 sunfire gt. This car for reasons beyond me was enegineered wired wrong. The pass lock system runs through the stero system and a whole bunch more. Those other post that say they didn't have to got very luck or they may be living with a problem, what ever I'd be very carefull my 99 sunfire has all sorts of electrical problems beacuse someone installed an after market stero and had wired it in. All my dash lights stay on and the car sometimes starts. I'm still chaseing gremilens

We're trying to install a aftermarket JVC and our local car audio installer sold me a harness that(after I told him it was a 32 pin connection) told me the 24 "would work." It doesn't. Ever hear of this????????

I was wondering when you say you got a harness at CT for $45 was it this product? http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/brow...nd+up+GM+Vehicles.jsp?locale=en&stop_mobi=yes

I'm looking into installing an aftermarket in my 2000 Sunfire but am confused by this product. The description on the website says 2000+ but the package clearly says 2003+. Just wondering if this worked for your 2000?

Also, were you able to get a radio antenna adapter at CT as well?

Thanks for any help!
