Hey everyone, I will be the proud owner of a running 1996 pontiac sunfire if I can fix this issue!
Here's the backstory:
The car belonged to my girlfriend, who gave it to her little sister after college. She didn't take care of it properly and let the car run out of gas. After fueling up the car started and drove but would not exceed 10 mph I was told, but still made it home accross town (I don't know why the car was still driven in this condition
but sigh) Vehicle is a 2.2L SE I believe.
Now the car starts and idles like normal, but as soon as you apply any gas it immediately sputters and tries to die. My first thoughts are fuel pump/fuel filter which often go when ran dry but I was under the impression the car won't start without a working fuel pump, am I correct? I listened for the hum/whine of the pump when the key was turned over but I couldn't hear anything. Could this be as simple as a clogged fuel filter? Or am I definitely having some pump issues as well? A buddy of mine mentioned that it sounded like it could be a vaccuum issue... but I am inclined to think the problem is related to the car running out of gas considering it was working fine just prior. Thanks in advance!
