I've change my rack and pinion, but having some problems getting the steering shaft booth rubber high enough to install the pinch bolt. Any help would be very appreciative.

I have worked on cars for many years, and I normally can translate what most people are talking about, But I am unsure what part you are talking about.

Are you talking about the reinstalling the rag joint to the rack?

If so, the shaft with the rag joint and u-joint attached should collapse some allowing the rack enough room to get reinstalled. but you normally have to get the rack input shaft into the clamp before you bolt the rack down.

Hopefully you did this with the steering column locked in place and did not over rotate the clock spring for your air bag.

steering shaft pinch bolt

I have the rack in place, everything is lined up, but i cant get the booth rubber up high enough to use a pry bar to silp the joint on the rack shaft.

when you removed the old rack, did you disconnect and remove the part your having a problem with first?

Do you have the old rack still? make sure the new rack matches exactly, It would not be the first time a parts person pulled the wrong part.

The part that your not getting I think is, when you install some racks you may have to remove the steering column, ( WITH THE WHEEL LOCKED IN PLACED TO AVOID DAMAGING THE CLOCK SPRING ) then remove the old rack, install the new rack then reinstall the steering column.

All of this would be covered in a service manual.

in the past when I changed out racks I would skip the process of removing the column by inserting the rack into the rag joint clamp before bolting the rack down.

if your rack is bolted down, and you do not want to remove the column you will have to take the rack back apart.

if you remove the column you will need a helper inside the car to assist you.

in this video the guy is changing a rack without removing the column, he clearly shows that you cannot completely remove the steering from the rack while the rack is bolted in place.

This means to you that you cannot install the steering rag joint pinch coupling while the rack is in place.

You will have to unbolt the rack possibly remove the lines and tie rod ends back the rack out of position.

Then slip the rack input shaft into the rag joint, put the bolts back in that hold the rack in place, install the pinch bolt then finish reassembly.
