I have 2000 Sunfire, 2.4L. This fall it started making a terrible metal on metal clanging sound coming from the passager side of the engine. (Like and old fashioned alarm clock). It was decided that the timing chain needed to be replaced. I replaced the chain, gears, and gaskets. You could see where the chain had been hitting the housing. The new parts fixed the problem for about a month and a half, but now the clanging is back, just as bad as before. I could be the chain again? Is there any hope for my poor car? It seems asham as it only has about 140,000 km on it.

did you replace the tensioner when you did the other work?

When you replaced the timing chain did you pay particular attention to the proper way to set the tensioner? It's been a while but I think you pre-load it by hand and hold it in place with an 18 gauge wire (or something similar) through a hole in the block. When the job is done the wire gets pulled and the tensioner works.

If not installed properly, the only tension you will get is a temporary high-ride of the chain on the new tensioner until the chain and plastic tensioner break in.

After that you're back to a loose chain, and they DO get noisy!

Defective tensioner? Tensioner or other retaining bolts not properly torqued and came loose?
