Hey guys, I'm still trying to decide which route to go. I'm thinking I probably aint gonna be able swing $$ for the 75 TA I posted earlier. I did find a 79 on the bay though that is just a few miles up the road from me. I'm trying to contact the guy through ebay to set up a time to look at it. It looks pretty good and I think it could be had cheap because it is a 301 ( not to offend any 301 owners). How hard would it be to put a 400 in it? Would I need to change motor mounts, would it bolt up to the current automatic trans, have any of you guys done this? And last but not least, anyone know of a good source (mag article or something on the net) to guide a guy through this? Any help would be appreciated.

check a site like www.napaonline.com to see if the engines use the same part number for the mounts. Im not sure about the transmission compatibility.

You could also try calling a GM dealer's parts dept and ask for the motor mount part numbers for the 301 and the 400. Also, the 79 with 400 only came with a standard transmission (mine has the Borg Warner Super T-10) so it may not line up with the automatic transmission. But the 78's with 400 had auto trans available so maybe it will. Again, the parts guys may be knowledgeable enough to help. You may want to check if you would need a different radiator. The 400 may have called for something more beefy. Again, the parts guys. Other than that, probably a few different brackets, etc and that's it.
Did you find a 400? Great if you did. Not many (compared to the full run) made it into 79 T/A's. They stopped making them in 78 and the leftovers went into the 79's. When they were gone, that was it. You'll really like having the 400 in there if you go that route. Good luck with the project.
