I am trying to track down an issue that I think might be related to the passlock system. Can someone run a hands-on experiment for me. I would like to know what your "theft system" dash light does. I have a 2004 Sunfire so the same year would be optimal, but I'll take what I can get.

Put key in and turn to accessory but do not start. Does the dash light come on for a few seconds and then go out? Does is stay out or come back on after a second or so? Now crank, does the light stay one while you crank? My assumption is that once it is started the light goes out.

Thanks.

Yes, I did. I don't think it is real clear. Maybe I am reading it wrong. It states:
"During normal operation, the THEFT SYSTEM light
will go off approximately five seconds after the key is
turned to the RUN ignition position following an
engine start"

Since the vehicle doesn't actually start, I don't know if that voids that statement. I am not sure if they are saying "engine start" and "engine crank and no start" are the same thing in this case.

That is why I was looking for some hands-on evidence of what it should do.

Five seconds after the key returns to run after being in the start position is what I'm reading.Engine start and engine no start seem different to me.

After you try to start the car and the key returns to the run position is the theft light still on?

The light would stay on. Turns out I shot myself in the foot... Apparently when I was trying to find out what the heck was going on, I removed the engine compartment fuse for the PCM and didn't put it back... Not knowing this and thinking either the passlock or a computer problem, I had it towed to a shop. Turns out after they figured out the fuse was missing and replaced it, they quickly determined the fuel pump was shot. That few dollar fuse I forgot to put back in led me away from the fuel pump, which was my first guess when this all started, straight into a 600 repair bill. I am assuming the theft security light was staying on because I didn't have any PCM power. Expensive lesson.

Thanks for all your input.
