thermostat

i did a system flush yesterday on my fiero gt 2.8l, and noticed i have no thermostat. i went to oriley and bought one, but when i put it in the block, and lowered the housing around it, there was a bar going across towards the bottom of the housing that doesnt allow me to put it down where it goes. what can i do? my thermostat is like every other one ive seen that has the strap thing on top. is there another style i need? HELP! PLEASE!

On Fiero's you do not remove the thermostat housing. You just pull off the cap and push in the thermostat. That is why you have a tall strap on it. The strap acts as a handle and points up.

Your thermostat should look like this:
