I'm told that it runs rich, has a backfire, and has very little top end power. Does anyone have an idea of what this could be and how easily fixable it might be? He's only asking 1000 for the car, so I wouldn't mind putting a bit into fixing it right away, but I just don't know how bad it could be. Thanks for you help!
 
Fieros

There are many different versions of the Fiero, not to mention the 1984 to 1988 production years. Overall, they greatly were improved for the 1988 model year.
 
Running rich and backfire could be as simple as the ignition timing or module is bad or it could be as expensive as there is a burnt valve, worn cam, worn timing chain, etc.

Is it worth $1000? All depends on the year/model/options, overall condition (aside from the engine problem), and how much you are willing to spend to repair or fix it up.
