Timing chain

I have a 2003 Grand am, When it reached about 155K I decided to have the timing chain replaced along with the water pump, because I was told when the chain goes so does the motor and I didnt want to put a new motor in it. Well I just reached 170K and the motor blew, when talking with the mechanic about it he stated that I should have never touched the timing chain, can anyone else agree or disagree with this. I did end up putting a new motor in but I want to find out if what he said makes sense.

What exactly caused the motor to blow, need the details.
 
Our 3.4L has close to 240k on it. The intake gasket was replaced but nothing else has been touched. Uses no oil between changes, has been tuned up once since we have owned it and runs great. More details would be good, it should not have hurt the engine to replace any part, even if it was not needed.
 
Usually, on the push rod engines like the 3400 V6, the timing chain is supposed to be good for the life of the engine. Even for the 2.2l OHC ecotec engine wich does have a timing chain also. So there is no need to replace it unless there is a major related issue. The older 2.4l had a timing belt wich drove the water pump also. So when it was time to replace either the timing belt or the water pump, it was recommended to replace both at the same time since one goes with the other.
You mentionned you have a 2003. Wich engine do you have? 2.2l Ecotec I4 or 3400 V6?

I bet the OP is talking the quad. I have had a 2.3 and 2.4 liter. Both had timing chains. More detail on what happened to the motor would be more help. Was it timiong chain related or not.

Zimgxp My mistake about the 2.4l having a timing belt. Did my homework like I should've done in the first place and looked it up in the Haynes manual and it does have a timing belt. Again sorry guys about the bad info :o
 
well unless the OP comes back, it's anybodies guess as to what really happened.
