i have a 2002 sunfire gt with a 2.2 ecotech engine and recently did a cylinder head and when it runs it has a rough idle but when you give it a little gas it runs fine. what my question is, is how do you set the timing without taking the timing cover off? also the engine does not back fire so does that mean that my intake cam is off, how could you tell if the exhaust cam is off by one tooth?

Thanks

Camshaft timing is based upon correctly setting the marks on the gears when changing a timing chain or tensioner. You cannt do anything to it without disassembly. What was done to the head? Are you sure the person who reassembled the engine could have incorrectly lined up the marks? Have you done a compression test? Any chance during reassembly someone left a vacuum line disconnected. Is your check engine light on?

I did the job and my old cylinder head crack so I got another one and machined it, there was a crack in my intake manifold so I replaced it and it ran a little better but it still had rough idle, it fires right away. I did get a code and it told me that the system was too rich. I took it to my mechanic friend and he said that the timing might be off by one tooth. Now I do know that I have to take off the valve cover and remove the tensioner but is there another way to do it without taking off the timing chain cover, I mean that it is really hard to get off because it is so tight.

how do know you dont have a bad iac

the idle air control valve on the throttle body will cause a rich running condition especially at idle.

ok well i did change the idle air control valve sensor and its still running rich. any ideas? could the timing still affect the extra adding of fuel or could it be another sensor? what about the throttle position sensor? i unpluged it and the car still ran the same. could that affect it also?

so you replaced the cylinder head without taking the timing cover off, if you did take the cover off did you follow instructions on alinging all the gears? did the engine run rich before you did the head? do you have a check engine light? you changed the iac with a new one?

well actually it turned out that my intake cam was off by one tooth so i changed it and now it runs better but i am thinking that it would have been off two teeth so i might have to fux that, so thanks for all of your help but i think that i can do it now, i am just going to play around with the timing untill it runs perfectly.
