i got an 86 trans am 350 5.7, had to fix head gasket so since i fixed that and out everything back together im now having trouble starting the car, i turned the #1 spark plug piston to its highest point already and still car wont start i went by the book already and still didnt start. i also did the compression test at the #1 spark plug and still no start. i dont know what else to do so if anyone can help please let me know what i can do

Are the wires on the right plugs and in the correct firing order? Do you have spark and fuel?

yea i got the firing order done right, still no start

You might of move the piston to the top off the stroke, but was it on the compression stroke? You might be off 180 degrees

yea i put my finger over the #1 spark plug and turned the crankshaft till i felt the compression, i tried 180 degrees out. now when i try to start my car i have some smoke that comes out of my throttle

whats the best way to tell when the piston is at the top of its compression stroke?

pull the valve covers, set the line on the harmonic damper to the Zero on the timing tab, the valves on number 1 cylinder should be closed and # 6 open, if not turn the crank till the line again is on zero. At this point the rotor in the distributer cap should be lined up with the #1 wire in the cap. If not loosen the distributer and turn the body till it lines up with the #1 wire and try starting it.

i replaced the harmonic balancer few years back and when i put it on i just slapped it right on and didnt set the mark thats on the balancer to the zero mark on the marker

the balancer has a key, it goes on only one way
