Hello everyone. I'm new here and I need some help. Today I turned my 1995 trans am off and when I went to start it,it would start and die about five times then i t ran but would feel like its bogging down or missing a little. So I got stuck in traffic and decided to turn it off tried to start it twice and it wouldn't start, then it wouldn't even turn over so I coasted off the road and tried again.......nothing so I checked battery and starter everything is good. I have power to everything just no guages and won't start when I turn key its silence. Like if I was trying to start it in gear.. which my car is an automatic lt1. The only thing I can think is its the vats. Any help would be great. Thanks

if your security light is on solid or flashing it's related to vats. Do you hear the fuel pump when you turn the key to the run position, if not it's pump related. Do you have spark?

I have no dash lights. I tried to bypass the vats and nothing. It seems so simple I just can't figure it out. It won't turn over so I can't check for spark and I can't hear the fuel pump.

The security system wont kill the dash lights.

I read somewhere that the ignition isn't getting power from the battery which is making the dash lights not work and not letting it start. They said something about a fuse in between the battery and the ignition, any ideas?

Check the wire going to the starter, it may have a fusible link.

Would that make the gauges not work though

How are you bypassing the switch? It's not like the old days where you can hotwire a switch.

By bypassing the vats u use a resistor which is separate from the ignition switch. And correct me if i mis speak but if your security light is not on or not flashing then it is not a vats problem.

I have no dash lights no gauges no dummy lights. With the key on everything works except won't start if I turn key to accessories nothing works.

crank position sensor

Is this a 3.8L. I had a 97 Camaro with v6 and it had the identical symptoms. My crank position sensor was going bad sometimes it would run good, then others it would miss real bad then not start at all. I had to remove the harmonic balancer then replace the sensor. It appeared to fail do to power steering fluid getting into the sensor.

U can tear apart the steering column and spray some contact cleaner in the ignition switch or giggle some wires around or twist or flex the switch and see if that changes any of your problems and if it does ur on the right track. I did a write up over on the sister forum buick forum about how to replace a ignition switch . Good luck.
