Transmission oil leaking.

Hi all. I have a 1989 Pontiac Sunbird with a leaking transmission.
It is a five speed transmission and the Sunbird is a Sunbird LE.
The car has 410,000 km with the original clutch and transmission in the shifting is still strong And smooth.

Would anyone have any ideas where I could start tracing the leak to?
Any photos would also be of great help.

you have to clean the transmission and then try to see the leak source or use a leak detection kit like the one in the link below

Stephan, probably its an axle shaft seal, common for the passenger side to go out first, Requires a removal of the right or left axle ( which ever one is leaking) just to get it changed.

Not hard but requires some basic mechanical skills.

Old seal comes out with a seal puller or carefull use of a screwdiver.

Hi Doug, sorry for the slow reply!
For the driver side I found the run channel (the top rubber that the window slides up into), and I found a close match for the window sweep that I had to modify, but it did not turn out to bad.
For the passenger side that I am actually working on now, I pulled the window channel from my old '93 Sunbird (which has now been scrapped).
It was slightly different from the one on my '89 Sunbird so I had to put a small screw at the top because it kept pulling out, do the retaining clip not being strong enough.
I did find a NOS lower felt for that side from a real nice guy Keith Evans from Nalley Buick!

I will send pictures later.
I managed to get many parts off the old Sunbird!

At least you are"Macgyvering" it to come up with the pieces. I'm just letting my as is since the rest of the car is slowly rusting away so no use in fixing my sweeps.

Just keeping it running is fine with me .......... and looking good at 20 feet away.......
