This morning my wife's car wouldn't start. The steering wheel was locked and the key could not turn in the ignition.
After turning the steering wheel, the key was able to move just enough to activate the lights on the dash. Then, the steering wheel was able to turn, but not in a full circle, only about 15 degrees. The brake was also locked, we were not able to push it at all.
When we tried to turn the key again, we got the same result, but we heard a "whirring" noise. The noise wasn't the engine trying to turn, it didn't even sound like the engine.
This may be related, but my wife said that for the past couple weeks her engine has taken a while starting. She has had to let the engine turn for a while before it would actually start.
She also said that when she is driving on the highway, her car (which is an automatic) stays in the same gear for long time.
Does anyone have an idea of what the problem is and how much it might cost to repair?
