troubles gaining speed

when i hit the gas it gains speed but it lags in between switching gears other then that it runs fine both the engine and transmission are stock the transmission is automatic any thoughts

Was planning to replace both in the future but don't know where to look but i am looking for performance if anyone can recommend a good 2.4L i could build off of that would be great too

how many miles on the vehicle?
how many miles since the transmission fluid and filter have been changed?
did you check the transmission fluid level and check if it smells burnt?

i just bout it not to long ago it has 140,000 miles

do you have the owners manual?
I assume you have a 1997?
The oldest I have access to is 1999, see the instructions for checking the 3 speed, I assume you have a 3 speed.

i got to it and it smells burnt and dark in color should i flush it

never flush it, drop the pan, replace the filter and pan gasket, and refill
