I have a 2000 Sunfire, needing any advice on the trunk latch mechanism. Have replaced it, but still not shutting the trunk. have replaced the cable as well. seems the mechanism wont engage when I close the trunk. any thoughts?

1. was the car in a rear end accident that caused the problem to start with?
2. have you manually closed the latch mechanism with a screwdriver or similar tool to confirm the latch will lock?
3. either the latch or the striker that it locks against has to have adjustment slots, have you tried any adjusting of either part?

Try adjusting the hook that it latches on to. I've had the same issue multiple times and that hook tends to bend out of place causing the trunk not to close

has there been a history of needing to slam the trunk to get it to shut? why was the original parts replaced?
Have you moved any heavy items in and out of the trunk recently ?
do you have the electronic trunk release button option?

mine used to, i just wd-40 all the mechanical parts, adjusted it.Try slamming it not hard enough to break something but hard enough to make it want to close. The other thing to watch out for is the trunk lock cylinder not unlocking the trunk. mine turns to a point where you can feel the pressure on the key

It's the striker happens all the time on my car just get a screwdriver and bend it back up

The OP asked for help, had many responses yet never came back.
no respect. no help
