My wife's 1999 Pontiac Grand Am GT has a problem with the turn signals. When driving the car, and you aren't even using the turn signals, you here the clicking sound that the turn signals make. Sometimes it's multiple clicks quickly, a few clicks here and there, just random. The signals do work as they should. Talked with a few people and they have never heard of this problem. Any help is truly appreciated. Thanks.

if the turn signals are working correctly it's probably not the turn signal relay making the noise. The car is equipped with multiple relays any one of which could be producing the sound. If the sound occurs when the car is in park, open the fuse box to try to determine if it's one of the relays in the box.

Thanks for the reply. I went out and pulled the fuse box cover under the hood and listened. After turning a turn signal on, the sound came back. Did not hear anything under the hood. But, I went inside the car and tried to pinpoint where the sound was coming from. It sounds to me like the sound is coming from the area of the hazard lights button, right above the radio. I turned on the hazards to check their operation and they checked okay inside and out. But after turning them off, the clicking sound comes back just like it does after turning off the turn signals. The clicking sound is the same sound that the turn signals and hazards make. Again, it is just at a different speed, faster. A lot of clicks sometime and sometimes just a few. Any other ideas? Thanks again.

The flashers where recalled at onetime for that issue. But it never really fixed the issue.
Replacing the multifunction switch will fix it.

By "multifunction switch" are you referring to the one on the steering wheel (that is used to turn the turn signals on? I'm sure that wouldn't be a cheap fix. Should I check with the dealer about the recall on the flashers? Thanks.

Yes the multifunction switch is the entire switch assy on the steering column.
Check with the dealer first. I doubt if they'll do aything for you.

I had the EXACT same problem & fixed it very easily, you need to remove the shroud from the steering column, unhook the turn signal multi function switch, then take a q tip soaked in rubbing alcohol over all the contacts & clean off the contaminated grease... check this out... http://www.wikihow.com/Fix-Grand-Am-Turn-Signals thats the site i found & it has pics and everything.

Hello Fishrguy,

Any luck on fixing this problem. I am haveing the same issue and have changed the hazzard switch which I was told could be the problem and it still does the same thing.

this is a 2 year old thread, did you try cleaning the connector as suggested above?

I am having a similar issue, just to clarify and make sure I am having the same issue tho, even when it's clicking rapidly on its own it will click normal once the turn signal is turned on right? That is whats happening with me anyways

I am having the same issue but am ignoring it for now. My clicking is coming from the dash where the hazard button is and just below the vents. Turn signals work so I am just letting it click away:D

It's probably the flasher assembly in the dash, common issue, videos on internet.
