Hi... replacing the valve stem seals on my 2002 Aztek (GM3400 motor and heads are off the car). I'm finding the new seals are very tight, to the point that I can't push them into place. From what I've read, the recommended way to install these is to lube them up and hit them with a hammer and socket that fits over the outer ring. The old ones came off pretty easy with a pair of pliers. I don't really see that I can hit it too hard since they eventually will have to seat at the bottom anyway, but just wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions. Is this normal? The seals are part of an aftermarket gasket kit (head gasket is the main reason this engine is apart) and to the naked eye, they appear to be the correct size/style.

You didnt send the head out to a machine shop to at the very least check the head for warpage?
Pushing them down with a socket is the normal way to install.
You double checked that you have the correct kit?

Yes, heads just came back from the machine shop. currently checking on the kit. UPDATE: confirmed I bought the right kit and was shipped the correct item. Probably being overly cautious.
