Figured I'd try and get some help from some experts before taking to the shop. Details: 99 Grand Am SE v6 w/ 170K mi. I started the car when leaving work and it started shaking pretty bad, engine was sputtering. When I put it into drive it got worse (it was hesitating). Check engine light started blinking and then went full on. I drove about 100 yards and pulled over. Let it run in park for about 3 minutes and it was like someone flipped a switch and the vibrations stopped. I was able to drive it 15 miles home without a problem. Once at the house and off - I turned it back on and the vibrations were back. I haven't tried to drive it since then (a few days now).

I couldn't find a comparable forum post - but I saw engine mounts and vacuum hoses pop up a few times related to vibrations. I welcome any insight and possible costs I should expect.

Borrow a scan tool if you don't have one and see what codes are stored in the computer. Autozone and some other parts stores will scan it for free although my AZ wants the "check engine" light to be on before they scan it.

Let us know what shows up.

Best - R

Yes, the check light came on right when all of this started (made it to work without the light and then the light came on as the vibrations started).

Getting to an AZ might be difficult, as I'm afraid I may get stranded once there. But I might know someone with a tool that can help or can get someone to follow me if I can catch a break with the engine as before.

After some expert review... they're citing that it may be a head gasket issue - which was replaced on a home job around 100K. There's coolant leaking and to know for sure - we'll have to pull plugs, etc...

Very depressing.
