Just bought a 1994 5.7 firebird. The voltage meter dips very low at an idle but goes back up to normal when I'm on the throttle. The battery is new. Also it has a hard time starting up every time. It takes a few seconds to start up and sometimes it takes two tries. Anyone have an idea of what might be wrong?

My wife's mustang did the same thing about a month ago. Luckily Im going college for my master ASE and had all the equipment readily available to confirm it. So if your voltage gauge is going up and down with the throttle then you need to get yourself a new alternator

You need to buy/rent a voltmeter and determine the actual alternator output. Make sure the connections to the alternator and the battery connections including ground and starter are all tight and clean.
