sunbrid water leak

the water pump is located under the timing cover, that is in the general are you are talking about. also, there is a large coolant pipe on the backside of the head, which ties in to the system a couple of places. i would check this as well. good luck

I had the water pump leak from the weap hole, a hose above it with a pin hole, and the weird one was the overflow coolant tank leaking from the bottom where you can see the mold line. 89 Sunbird GT Turbo.

check the thermostat housing the 2.0, 2.2 and 2.4L engines have been known to have a faulty thermostat housing gasket. my friend had that problem on his cavilier. the fix, he bought a cork gasket cut it to make 4 gaskets and torqued the housing down. havent had a problem since

Help please!!

Hey guys! I've got a coolant leak myself. I just replaced the waterpump on my 93 2.0L Sunbird(2 months ago), and am now having a MASSIVE coolant leak. The car overheated on the highway yesterday so I pull off, and steam comes bellowing out of where the waterpump area is. I open the radiator cap, pull the t-stat and start filling with a 50/50 mix. This was at night, so I couldn't see too well, but I hear it start hitting the ground! From what I can tell is, it's coming from the flange where the hose does a 90 degree bend, and back to the engine. Is this a common problem? Is there a gasket that I can just swap out? Any help is appreciated, as this car just needs to get me through the winter! Thanks everyone!!

major water leak

not sure where this flange is you are referring to, but it seems suspicious that you just got done changing water pump, now you have a coolant leak. i would investigate that as well

Sounds like he's talking about the thermostat housing (elbow).

Well, it ended up being the t-stat housing gasket as you guys suggested! I replaced it, and the car ran great....... for about a week or two. I started to run hot again, and was losing coolant AGAIN! The car would stumble upon startup, and for the first 30-60 seconds of driving, but would then smooth out. My assumptions are that the headgasket let go, and its dumping coolant into the cylinders, and it's taking a good minute or so before it burns off. So my question to you guys is, what is my best option to get this thing running, and get it ready to sell? Should I just put a new headgasket in, or is there more to it than that, usually? I plan to replace most of the gaskets from the head on up, such as the intake manifold, and anything else I have to take off. Any sources for cheap parts? Is there a good chance the head is bad? What service manuals do you suggest, Chiltons/Haynes?? Any help would be appreciated! TIA!
