Hey

So i was working on my gfs car today, She was getting some weird shifting now and than so i said i could change the fluid and filter. Her car is a 2000 sunfire 2.2L with the 4 speed auto 4T40. So i dropped the the pan, got 6L of fluid out, Replaced the filter, And put a new seal on the pan and put it back on. I put 6L of new dexron fluid in and let it idle for 15min. I pulled the check plug, And 5.5 L came out!?

Im not sure if something went wrong, Or was it just that overfilled? shes owned the car since the spring and the previous owner was this really stupid girl she works with. And she said she had the transsmision flushed in the winter at canadian tire. Is it possible that those idiots overfilled it somehow after? or did i do something wrong?

I left the plug out till it stopped pouring and then put it back in, It idles and drives fine.

I guess they could have overfilled it (anything like that is possible). Was the engine running when you had the check plug out? If the motor wasn't running, you will lose too much fluid. Also when you change the fluid, you need to run it through the all the shifter positions before checking the level.

Read this about the correct procedure.

ya i had the engine running, and i shifted through all the gears, and im sure the plug i pulled was the check fluid plug, unless there is another one close to the same area thats 11mm. Ive never had this issue before even with similar transmissions, Like the 4T45. I think something went wrong tho because there is no way they could of had 6L to much in it this whole time. So to be safe and till i figure it out i but back in the 6L that came out.

Does anyone actually know how much fluid comes out with a pan drop? its usually easy info to find but i cant find it anywhere.

"not owner serviceable" thanks GM, i dont know what they were thinking when they put this together. Obviously ppl are going to do their own work.

Well, that's what they want you to think, but we all know better.:D

ETA: looking at the capacities, with a fluid/filter change it only needed 3.8 liters of fluid, it was most likely overfilled.
