What are my options for direct engine swaps with a 3rd gen. Pontiac Firebird?

I'm looking at buying an early 3rd generation firebird... most of them seem to be 6 cylinders. That's just not going to work for me. ;) I was wondering what choices I have for putting a v8 into it. Key words here are "direct swap." I'm not a fabricator by any means, so anything that doesn't line up correctly will just be costing me more money than I care to spend. Thanks in advance!!

then goto the message board / forums. then the swap forum.

If you start with a V6 car, you will have quite a bit of work to swap to a V8. Start with at least a 305V8 if you want to do any thing involving a V8. the mounts and trans, computer, fule pump, every thing that is basicly needed for a V8 is not used in the V6 cars. (I was going to swap a 350 into my 85 V6, but now i'm doing a turbo 3.1 just because I dont want to mess with the stuff to change to a V8 when I only want about 250-300 crank HP.)

its realy not that hard to do a swap. all v6 firebirds came with the holes already drilled on the frame for the v8 engine mounts. you can buy the mounts from your local parts store. depending on what motor was in it will determine if you have to change the trans. if it is a 4.3 litre than the bell housing is the same. and you can use the stock trans. anything else you have to change the trans. if you go carburated than you toss the computer. you have to change the exhaust. and do some re-wiring. but it is not that hard. if you got any questions drop me a line.

There is NO "direct swap" that is easy for a V/6 to V/8 conversion it would be easier to just get a V/8 car, the transmission, fuel systems and all the brackets are different between the two vehicles
so you would be swapping the entire engine /trans combo plus the systems that operate them ...
keep looking if you really want a V/8 car...
