What does Ram Air mean?

I have a friend that has a 1997 Trans Am WS6 Ram Air who says that it means that the air is pushed through the intake in the hood so that it gets more air and power like a supercharger or turbocharger. From what I have read, the added horsepower from the Ram Air model is created mostly from larger and polished valves and ports. Any body know anything about this? I just have a hard time believing that unless you were going over 100mph you wouldn't see much added power from air being forced in. It still has to make it past the filter and even at high speeds you wouldn't see nearly the power gains that a turbo or super charger add.

it does help alittle at high speeds but not much more than a cold air. the reason they have alittle more power is beause the ram air gets alot more air that the stock or regular t/a and its colder. the stock one pulls air from the engine bay in front of the radiator and ram air from outside the bay. the exhast is alitle better as well.
