Hey guys im new here, just bought a 78 firebird, wondering what engine I have. According to my v.i.n. it is a 305 but im not sure it is original. These are the numbers I found stamped on the front right side of the block by the water pump.

Are you looking at a pad below the passenger side/right side cylinder head where it meets the block? There should be a 2 character code. What intake and carburetor are on the engine? Do the last 6 digits of your VIN match the numbers on the block?

Last 6 digits of vin is 148823. Intake is an edelbrock. Not sure on carb, but it is a 4 barrel. And I wouldnt assume it is factory. The block and heads are still pontiac blue. Yes right where the right cylinder head meets the block is where I was looking. These are all the stampings that were on that little pad.

I wanted you to check if the last 6 digits of your VIN match the numbers on the pad, if they dont, you do not have the original engine. You have a Chevrolet, the CMJ code was used in 74 as a 350 and in 1980 as a 305. The K1128 tells you it was made in St. Catherines, Ontario, on November 28th. To determine whether it is a 74 or an 80 you need the casting date. Look at this link to determine what it is.
