What is the difference between a 2001 Pontiac Aztek, and a 2001 Pontiac Aztek GT?

I like cars, but I will admit, I only pay attention to the make and model really. Can anybody tell me the difference between the GT, and the regular? For that matter, what does GT generally mean for a car anyhow? Like I have seen a Pontiac Grand Prix GT, and a Pontiac Grand Prix GTP. Is this only a Pontiac thing?
 
In the 2001 the true GT model would have been a leather equipped Aztek. Nice rims and tires. It would also had the cooler center console as well as the tent package.
 
Mostly trim and other whistles & bells.
GT used to mean "grand torismo" after the famous racing series.
Now a days they use GT to designate a "performance" upgrade (whatever that is).
At this point in the game a GT version of any type could mean anything to anyone at anytime as long as it means the car will "go faster".
And no it's not just a Pontiac thing. I've seen GT versions of escorts, cavaliers, chevettes and even the lowly geo metro.
