Hello all,
I may have a problem. It appears that none of the auto parts supply stores here on Maui sell the Pennzoil needed for the manual trans axle in the 96 Sunfire.

There also seems to be little information on what other oil, if any, can be substituted. There's all kinds of opinions, and theories on rear wheel drive transmission oils, but not much,if any on the trans axles.

Anyone know of a suitable replacement?

This is not a race car, and it obviously isn't going to be driven in cold weather. Sustained high speed driving is not going to happen either.

Thanks for any ideas.

I assume you dont have an owners manual. It states
Synchromesh Transmission Fluid
(GM Part No. 12345349
or equivalent). Such as Penzoil Synchromesh or any other major brand

Thank you for the tip.
As I said earlier, the Pennzoil Synchromesh,or any of its equivalents, are not available on Maui.

However,I was able to locate a couple quarts of the Amsoil brand synchromesh trans axle fluid on a neighboring island, and with that the problem is solved. The Amsoil is as close as I'm going to get, without having order the fluid on line.

Gotta love living in a third world country where stores are afraid to stock anything that is out of the norm. I wonder how many of these front wheel drive cars are running around down here with plain old gear oil in the trans axles. When asking about the "special fluid" the parts "experts" didn't have a clue what I was referring to.

Thanks again.
