What sets off my alarm in my 1998 pontiac firebird?

I have a 1998 Pontiac Firebird with a factory optional Anti-Theft Alarm System in it and I don't really know what it does. I am considering an upgrade to a $400 alarm system from bestbuy if this one doesnt provide enough security alone. Can anyone let me know what happens when someone breaks a window or just what will set that off? Thank you so much. I work in a somewhat bad neighborhood and I just got the car this month.

Normally the factory alarms only protect the car from being opened and driven away, they don't provide the best protection from your average break in, but I believe the newer ones do offer some break in protection .. like window and hatch breakage will set it off
you may want to contact your local dealer to find out if they have any info on the systems ..
