Where can I find shift cables for a 1995 sunfire GT 2.3 liter 5 speed manual?

I've called parts stores, junk yards, looked in junk yards and nothing. I called all the local dealers, and they all said GM discontinued this part. On Ebay, there's a few, but I don't know if they'll fit my car. It's a 1995 2.3 liter 5 speed. The vin number is 1G2JD12D9S7513731.
 
2258469 22650700 are the two part numbers. every dealer i call say theyve been discontinued and they cant order them.
 
it's an mj1 transmission.

that is correct, it has been discontinued. Did the junkyards try a national search?
 
They've said that whatevers in their yard is what they have. I called AC Delco directly and they said they dont manufacture it any more. So now I'm going to try contacting Pontiac and see whats up.
 
the last year it was used was 1995, which is 18 years ago, they dont make it, GM, Pontiac, AC Delco. After the 10 year mark parts are quite often discontinued by the original manufacturer. You have to find it from a salvage/junk yard or find one on e-bay.
 
Pontiac says they'll contact their one of their 'internal' departments to confirm is it discontinued, and if it is, they'll work with the dealerships parts department to find alternatives to the part that is needed.

I checked the shifter bushing and there's no play on them. It goes into all the top gears and not the bottom ones. When I try to go into one of the bottom gears, the cable doesn't release enough to push the linkage into those bottom gears. I can literally put it in 2nd, and then by hand, grab the cable on the linkage and pull the linkage/cable the rest of the way into 2nd. I'm guessing the cable must be frayed/some of the strands broken or something inside. I've looked at the linkage from inside, under, all the way out to the hood and everything looks normal.

The woman from Pontiac emailed me back and said that it was discontinued. But I wasn't completely at a loss yet, and that she was "provided with information to provide to a dealership to locate an alternative part that may work for me" and wanted to know which dealership near me that I wanted to work with. So we'll see, I replied. I'll probably get an email back tomorrow.
 
OK, please realize they probably expect you to bring the car to the dealer to have the repair performed.
 
Got an email today from her. Telling me she's going to inform the dealer of the steps that need to be performed in order to locate a part for my vehicle. She said once she had the information from them, she'll inform me of when to go to the dealer and have it ordered and to expect a response from her no later than Monday. So I hope this can be good. I did ask for a part number of this supposed "part" she was going to inform the dealer about so we'll see if she tells me.

I also found a junk yard 30 minutes away with a 95 sunfire gt 2.3 liter... but the woman there said she wasn't sure if it was a manual or automatic and that she didn't have enough man power today to go out and look and told me to come by and look. I'm going to try to get the VIN number from her tomorrow so I can look up the vehicle and see if its an auto or manual. It'll probably most likely be an automatic lol.

Maybe I'm just a pessimist but follow up on that junk yard car.
 
called that junkyard today... woman tells me its a 95 automatic 2.2 liter :(

so I got an email just now from the Pontiac woman and she said the part was discontinued in 2010 but was available for 15 years for purchase, ha! and she told me to check out an aftermarket place like Auto Zone, Car Quest, or Pep Boys, ha. What a bummer. I found a guy on Ebay selling car parts from a 95 2.3 but it was an automatic :(

I found the bad spot on the cable. It's right in front of the shifter at the end of the cable where it connects to the bracket. The rubber is actually off the end of the cable fitting and I can see pieces/strands of the cable sticking out of the rubber and right between is some sort of other cable that actually moves is connected to the shifter and moves the linkage. I don't know if this could be repaired or not. I would have to take out the center console to get to it and take a look. It's as if throughout the years of shifting through gears has pushed this rubber off of the end.


Anyone know how to remove the center console?

I would start considering if the cable from a 96 can be modified to work. I would steer clear of anything outside of this country.
