My 1994 TransAm has a bad rod. A friend of a friend has taken out the engine and took it apart. He told me I needed to find a shortblock and we could reuse my heads and other parts. I just can’t seem to find a shortblock for a good price. I've seen whole used engines online for sale at the same prices I've been seeing shortblocks. Any help would be appreciated, thank you.

if you have a bad rod why are you looking for a short block.?Even if the rod damaged the crank you still wouldnt need a shortblock. Assuming you have a valid need for a short block, what price range are you looking for?

Well, the guy that is working on it tells me that in order to make everything clean and right I should bore it out and get some new pistons. From what I gather from him is that my block is good but it would be wise to rebuild and replace everything in it. It could take a long time to have everything sent off and machined, I thought too that by the time I had the block machined out and the crank machined—ordered new parts—then I would have to hope an trust he built it all back right. My hopes were that I could just find a shortblock somewhere and have him reuse my heads and intake—save some time, money and hopefully make it easier to put it all back right again.

I’m seeing shortblocks online for around 2 and 3 thousand. I’m also seeing things like this. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/94-P...r_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3cb12178c7

If I can find the whole engine for around 2,000 then I would assume I should be able to find a short block for around 500 or so.

It is not about how much I have to spend, I’m going to borrow the money… I just need to spend the money wisely. I’ve heard a few rebuild horror stories, I would be more comfortable with a shortblock. But then again this is the first time I ever had to go through this.

What do you all recommend? Any and all advice will be well appreciated.
Thanks again!

Okay, so lets say I decide to go with a new engine... Since I am getting all of this work done could someone please poit me to some nice LT1 Aluminum Engine Dress Up Kits and maybe even some Stainless Steel or Aluminum Underhood Covers?

Thanks again.

dont you have a local machine shop to work with? why would you trust something on ebay more than having your existing engine done? you can try www.summitracing.com for parts

Contact a machine shop to get a price on machining. They might even assemble it for you.
